Who do I hire for mold removal in Texas?

Answered from: Tex. Occ. Code Ch. 1958, CDC Mold Cleanup Guide

Answer

In Texas, mold remediation is licensed by TDLR. A job affecting 25 contiguous square feet or more has to be done by a licensed Mold Remediation Contractor (or a licensed company), and a separate, licensed Mold Assessment Consultant writes the protocol the remediator follows and performs the clearance afterward. The same license holder can't do both on one project, and the two companies can't share owners.

CDC's general advice is to look for professionals certified by recognized bodies such as NEHA, AIHA, IICRC or ACAC, and it notes that states may regulate the work — which Texas does.

Our recommendation

Hire the assessor yourself, before the remediator. Ask each company for its TDLR license number and check it, ask to see the protocol and the remediator's work plan before work starts, and be wary of any company that offers to do both the assessment and the cleanup.

What the sources say

“mold remediation unless the person holds a mold remediation license.”

“A person may not own an interest in both the entity that performs assessment services and an entity that performs remediation services on the same project.”

“Your state also may regulate mold remediation.”
