Virginia lawmaker plans to bring back a bill on renters exposed to mold
What happened
Virginia Delegate Cia Price plans to reintroduce a bill in the 2027 legislative session to strengthen protections for renters exposed to mold, the Virginia Mercury reported on October 23.
A tenant-side attorney quoted in the report warned that an earlier draft would have raised what a renter must prove to recover damages, from ordinary negligence to gross or willful negligence. The bill's final language has not been set.
What it means for homeowners
- Renters' mold rights vary by state and are changing; Texas has no mold-specific renter statute today.
- Whatever the state, written notice to the landlord and dated photos are the record a renter will need.
- Watch the burden of proof in any new bill: it decides how hard it is to recover damages.
